ACCEPTANCE UNDER PROTEST

'WELLINGTON, June 11

With the expiring of the time limit set by the Prime Minister the tunnellers at Tawa Flat have agreed to return; to work l on the Government terms, ending the .Stoppage that began eight weeks ago.

The. Government’s ultimatum stated that unless the men returned to work < ' to-day, others would be taken on in their places.

The Tawa Fiat branch of the New Zealand Workers’ Union deliberated for more than three hours to-day. Finally they indicated that they were prepared to resume providing that the' stoppage did not constitute a break in their sen ice for holiday purposes and. that -the Inspecting 'Engineer would accompany the Union’s representative on a visit to several jobs to check, up the reduced prices ' Both conditions were accepted; Mr Arthur Cook Secretary of tm> Union said that the cuts imposed were neither fair nor- equitable. Their acceptance of the Department's conditions! in no way indi nted the men’s satisfaction.

All sections of the workers on the Stratford Main Trunk Railway, including the tunnellers, have agreed to resume work to-morrow under the Government’s reduced scales of wages.
