FIRE ESCAPES ADEQUATE
PANAAIA HOTEL OUTBREAK

WELLINGTON, May 22,
The superintendent of the fire brigade, at a meeting of the Fire Board to-day, said that the fire-escapes at the Panama Hotel were adequate. The trouble was that the occupants did not use them, hut lost their heads and jumped. The last person saved was Mrs Hyde. She had the souse to wait until the brigade could rescue her by a ladder. She was unhurt. Those, who jumped were injured.
The hoard decided to obtain a special report on wooden hotels in Wellington. “Some, are only built of scrim and paper,” remarked one member.
