A FIRE

DAWEYHIKE, Alay 25

A fire occurred in High Street at ten on Saturday night in a wooden building at the south end of the town, which escaped the hig blaze of 1017. Ibe brigade made a good save, fortunately being iavoured hy the absence of wind.

The drapery simp of A. C. Currie, was completely gutted and stock lost. The building was owned by G. W. Wright of Wellington and insured in the State Fire Department f'«»r £275 and New Zealand Office for -C125. Currie’s stock for C6OU in the 1.0. A.

Other premises affected to a minor degree were Aleakin (fruiterer), Hill’s ca.e, .Martin (Jeweller), Shin* (fruiterer), Peoples’ Butchery. An estimate of the structural damage is impossible. Alost of the loss is covered by insurance.

A meeting was held on Sunday night, under the auspices of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, .appealing for assistance for Public Works employees allegedly locked out by the Government in its refusal to meet the tunneller’s demands. A motion was carried calling on tlie Government to accept an offer of the men to work at agreement rates viz. 16 shillings a day and so immediately end the lockout. Arrested on a warrant, issued in August 1929, Albert Holt, 35, an actor, was charged to day with absconding from bail jn August 1929, after having been committed to the Supreme Court for trial on a charge of indecent assault. The police said the man had been arrested this month at Opotiki under the name of Sam Wilson. Holt was committed to prison to await the next sitting of the Supreme Court. COURT CHARGES. TIAIARU. Afny 25. Percy Clifford Holland, was charged at the Police Court this morning with the theft of 9!) sheep, valued at £SB, the property of Smith Bros. He was remanded until June 2nd. Accused was arrested on Sunday morning at Beautiful Valiev. Roderick Gordon Stammers, admitted a- charge of forgery hy altering an order for £2 2s 6d to £l2 29 Od, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
