FIRE
PANAMA HOTEL BURNT. (By Teleyraph — I‘er Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 21. Panama Hotel, at the corner of Taranaki and Vivian Streets, a two-stor-ied wooden building was totally destroyed by fire, which was discovered s\t about 3 o'clock this morning. When the Brigade arrived, the buiLLing was totally enveloped in flames. Six people are in hospital suffering from burns or the effects of smoke. Mrs H. Hyde was rescued just in the nick of time from a parapet between the two floors. Those injured are: — Karl lllians, badly burned, contrition serious. .Miss Margaret Park, severely burned' about Die face and hands and suffering from shock. George Michael Skene, Harry Hyde, John Joseph Crowley, and Miss BJones, who was cook at the hotel, burns and smoke. Two firemen, J. Dewinter and C. Flaslioff, were slightly burned, but were able to carry on. Constable J. Edwards of MountCook station, burned his hands, and' was treated by the Jree ambulance. A strong north-west wind was blowing and carried tile flames to adjoining buildings on both sides of the street, the Brigade being called upon to deaf with several smalt outbreaks at the same time, , . GARAGE BURNT
PALMERSTON NORTH, May 21. Three valuable motor lorries, owner!, by the Kairanga Dairy Coy., at Longburn, together with a large garage, were destroyed by fire at- one o’clock this morning. The outbreak was noticed hv a passerby. Factory employees wc-re aroused but the fire had too firm a hold to save the garage. The factory and two stores close to the garage suffered no damage. The loss is covered by insurance.
FIRE AT ROSS
An alarm of fire was given last night at*B.ls o’clock, the scene of the outbreak being a six-roomed residence at the rear of Moorhouse Street, occupied bv Air Frank Pile. There was no one in. tiie building when the fire was discovered by Air R. Cherrie, whose residence is only a few yards away.
