THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.

NEXT SESSION AND AFTER. 'When Parliament re-assembles next month, the Government will, the Prime -Minister states, stand or fall by the acceptance or rejection of the measures which it will then have to present, covering the postponed portion of its financial policy. This statement may be held to imply a refusal by the Government of the offer by Mr Coates to furnish a committee of members of the Reform Party to confer with Ministers in the preparation of the legislation that will be necessary in order that the Budget for the current year may be balanced. The offer was one of an entirely novel character, the patent weakness in which was that the Government must in any case assume the entire responsibilty for legislation that is introduced on its behalf. —Otago Times.
