Rapid advance is now being made with tlie re-conditioning of the m.s. “Gael”. The Gardner engines are now in position on a very firm bed, and the equipment is being installed by contract by the firm of Nalder and Coy. of Nelson. On Saturday a deputation including the Mayor (Mr Perry). Captain McGregor, Messrs J- A. Murdoch, D. J. Evans and J, Renton, waited on Mr T C’agnev, Commissioner ol Crown Lands, in respect to the aviation landing site suggested at South Hokitika. The plan of the area was inspected, the greater part of the landing being an Agricultural Reserve, where in former times experimental plots were in use. The land is used at present for grazing stock. Captain McGregor agreed that the area would he very useful for the purpose proposed, and if available no doubt other planes from Christchurch and other parts of the Dominion would land there. It seemed to be the most economical proposal to bo undertaken within a reasonable time. At the request of the deputation. the Commissioner agreed to get into touch with the Department as to the terms on which the area would he available for the purpose proposed, Rentou thought the ground could be put in order lor an expenditure of about- £’b;o. and be believed it would soon be put to a pracI 1 irial use by visiting machines from various parts of the Dominion.
