WRECK OF THE PROGRESS

NEED OF A LIFEBOAT, (By Telegraph — L'er Press Association) WELLINGTON. -May 8. The necessity for a lifeboat service at Island May was stressed by a deputation to -Mr Forbes which urged that had a lifeboat been available on he occasion of the Progress disaster, it would have been possible to save the lives of all the crew. Air Forties expressed sympathy with the request, but said he thought the whole matter should be . inquired into by a conference of representatives of the various interested parties, including the Government. Fie subsequently made a suggestion that the Island Bay residents might see their way clear to raise a fund, and in the event of that being done, he would be prepared to consider making a fifty-fitty contribution. SURVIVORS OF THE “PROGRESS” WELLINGTON, May 8. The survivors of the “Progress” wreck, Messrs Kustaa Haneroa, William Jivnns, J. A. Collins. Jack Morgan, Felix Kurisiek, and Fritz Dogerbohn, were disc hag red from the Hos* - pitul.

John Metcalf, ship's fireman, ’is reported to be in a fairly serious condi* tiort, although the Hospital authorities stated to-day there was a slight ha pro vein ?nt.

As Metcalf was in the ship’s engine!'oom, his evidence should be of interest at the inquiry into the mishap. It s bis illness that is holding up the n-eliminary inquiry conducted by the Marine Department.
