NEW POSTAGE

PICTORIAL ISSUE WANTED MANY SUITABLE DESICNS. Philatelists an* hoping that the revision of the postal rates will lead to the issue of a new series of pictorial stamps for the Dominion. The present pictorial stamps are stated to have been in use with slight variations, for about seventeen years. One of the finest advertisements that New Zen* hill'd over received was from the issue of pictorial postage stamps in 1898. That series was remarkably popular with collectors in every country In the world, and tin* mistake in the spelling of Lake Wnkatipu, necessitating a new plate being prepared was of substantial benefit to the finances of the country. It is considered that no difficulty would he experienced in obtaining suitable designs for a pictorial issue of stamps. .Such resorts at Waitomo Caves, Rotorua, Mount Fgmout, Bullet' Gorge, Fraivi .Josef Glacier and other well-known resorts could be exploited.

To meet the convenience of the public it is proable that the postal authorities will take steps to have the supplies of letter-cards and postcards in hand over-printed with the correct amount of their postage under the new tariffs. Similarly, the postcards embossed with half-penny stamps require another half-penny affixed. By overprinting the letter-cards and the postcards with twopence and a penny res. poctively anil selling them at the increased rate the necessity of attaching adhesive stamps would he avoided, The small booklets with supplies of penny and half-penny stamps are extensively used h.v the public and when the present supplies of these arc exhausted it is also likely that booklets of two-penny and penny stamps will lie made up to meet the new conditions brought about by the change in the tariffs
