A RETIREMENT. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 23. After forty years service in the Post and Telegraph Department, the telegraph superintendent at Wellington, Mr H. W. Allen has retired on superannuation. At a large gathering of telegraph officers, the staff bade him farewell and after presenting him with a number of valuable gifts, wished him the best of good luck in his retirement.
To Mrs Allan the staff made the gift of an afternoon tea set. During his official career, Air Allen held responsible positions in many parts of the Dominion. BODY IDENTIFIED. WELLINGTON, Feb. 23. Thu body found floating fn the harbour on Saturday Ims been identified as that of Ruby Small, aged 25, who has been a resident at the Y.W.C.A. Hostel in Brougham Street. The body has apparently been in the water 12 hours. Little is known of the deceased, but her parents are believed to live at Shannon. RATE OF EXCHANGE. WELLINGTON. February 23. Important adjustments in the exnhatige rates between New ,Zealand and Australia were announced by associated hanks trading in New Zealand as from to-day. The following will bo rates:—Buying per hundred pounds sterling New Zealand £llß ]2s fid with the right to concede down to £lO5 for genuine trade transaction. Selling per hundred sterling N-Z. £lO4 10s no concessions. OBITUARIES. BLF.NHEIAI, February 23. Obituary.—John James Winsbury White, a very old resident of Marlborough formerly clerk to Marlborough Provincial Council, and ex-district agent of the public trustee. He filled many public positions. The- death occurred on Saturday of E. Mead, aged 80, ex-secretarv of Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, and ex-secretary of Marlborough Club, and a prominent business man.
DROUGHT BROKEN. BLENHEIM, February 23. The drought which held Marlborough in its grip for nearly a year was broken last night, good rain falling over the province. Tt is hoped the downpour will continue hut the weather is showing signs of clearing. FALSE PRETENCES. WANGANUI. February 23. At the Supreme Court, Justice Reed sentenced Christopher Walter Walsh to 12 months hard for obtaining £l2 lf)s by fraud from Tui Street Meat Coy.. Taihane. the Judge remarking—- “ You seem to have been doing a. lot of this false pretences business.”
