UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD

MINISTER WANTS LOCAL BODY CO-OPERATION.

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 29.

The Chairman of the Unemployment Board, Hon. Smith, in a statement today stated the Board was receiving very little encouraging help from a large majority of local Committees in various parts of the Dominion, and now members have become familiar with the conditions under which the subsidies are granted, co-ordination between the Board and Committees is more effective. It is becoming increasingly evident that whatever reduction of unemployment is possible, largely rests on the complete co-oper-ation of local committees and local bodies with the Board.

An essential fact to be noted by all local bodies and local committees in applying for grants, is that the work must be such as would not otherwise he done, and that workers must be selected from the ranks of registered unemployed. Hon Smith points out that the Board cannot produce money by waving a wand, and indicates to local , bodies that n little clear thinking will resultin a better realisation of the facts. With local committees bodies and the Board working as one unit, with one clear aim. there should very soQU be a marked reduction in the total Of unemployed.
