IDLE STEAMERS
UNION COMPANY VESSELS

AUCKLAND, January 5
Ten of the Union Company’s steamers are laid up at Auckland, and the trans-pacific cargo vessels Waikawa and Waiotapu, which are due next week from Westport and Newcastle respectively, will also be laid up. Some have been withdrawn owing to the slackness of trade and others to undergo overhaul. Some are idle owing to the holidays and they will be. recommissioned early this month u hen the West Coast mines resume working. The idle vessels of the company’s fleet now in port ar e the steamers K a repo, Tvaituna, Kanna, Kaimiro, Waipabi, Waitemata, Waitomo, Kurow, Kairanga and Waimea. The Waitomo, Waitemata, Kairanga are- trans-pacific cargo steamers and have been withdrawn owing to the slackness of trade between New Zealand and America. When the Waikawa and Waiotapu are withdrawn next week it- will leave only the Wairuna, Waihcmo. and Hauraki in the trans-pacific cargo service.
