ECONOMY POLICY

IN STATE SERVICES. (By Telegraph--Per Press Assor:ation.) WELLINGTON, January 6. The Special Economy Committee which the Government set up to make a drastic overhaul of all the Departments of State, from the Prime Minister downwards, has keen sitting today, for the first time. This committee is to investigate and report, -from time to time, to Cabinet -on further limitations and economy in the State Services. The personnel comprises the Minister of Native Affairs, (Mr Apirana Ngata), the DeputyLeader of the Legislative Council (Mr Masters), Minister of Railways (Mr Veitch), a head of the Treasury (Mr Park), and the Public Service Commissioner (M r Verschaffelt). In a statement last month, the Acting Prime Minister (Mr Ransom) said that the country was faced at present wit'll a substantial reduction in the national income, and the expenditure would have to he adjusted accordingly. The position was a most difficult one for any government, hut Cabinet was bringing the whole economic situation under review. The Government'' fully recognised that the question of lower rates and taxes was involved in this pressing problem, and the Economy Committee would make a searching investigation and overhaul ot all the Departments: . ,
