The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championships concluded at Wilding Park in glorious weather, before the biggest attendance of the tournament.
1 A feature of the tournament was that every title changed hands. Results.
Men’s- singles, final: —Stedman (Auckland) beat Barnett 7/5, 6/1, 6/3. Ladies’ singles, final: — Mrs H. M. Dykes (Auckland) defeated Miss Marjorie Macfarlane 6/1, 9/7. Men’s doubles, final:—!. A. Seay and C. Angas (Canterbury) defeated D. G. and A. L. France 6/3, 6/3, 6/3. Mixed' doubles, semi-finals : —Miss Andrew and Seay defeated Mrs Adams and D. G. France 7/5, 4/6, 6/4; Mrs Thomson and Wilson defeated Miss 'Wake and Stedman 6/2, 3/6, 11/9. Final.—Miss Andrew and Seay (Canterbury) beat Mrs Thomson and Wil-son-7/5, 3/6, 7/5.
Girls’ singles, final: —Miss N. Bishop (Christchurch) beat Miss C. Reese 6/2, 6/5.
- Junior mixed doubles, final: —Miss M. Howe and N. Davys (Wellington) beat Miss T. Poole and E. Kean 6/1, 6/5.
TILDEN IN TALKIES. NEW YORK, December 30. ' Tilden lias announced his immediate retirement from the ranks of amateur tennis. He intends to take up cinema work, and presumably to make a series of tennis “talkies.” ENGLAND V. INDIA. DELHI, January 1. FERTILISER INDUSTRY. MELBOURNE, Jan. 2. A seriottis position is arising in the fertiliser industry. Owing to a successon of lunfavownible seasons duiing the last few years, companies engaged in this business had to extend the utmost consideration to their customers. The limit of credit has now been reached and some new basis of finance must he arranged for the planting season this year. ' Recent statements of accounts issued by the principal companies show their outstanding accounts with storekeepers or farmers amount to two million sterling. Many accounts have been owing for three years. AN INCORRECT REPORT. SYDNEY, January 2. A cable message was received from London announcing the death of Marshal Joffre, but a subsequent message stated the report was unfounded and a official bulletin was issued saying Le was resting tranquilly.
