GANDERS AS GUARDS. RAIDERS IN HAMPSHIRE. LONDON, December 20. Legend recounts how a cackling gander when it saw the enemy climbing over the wall saved the Roman Capitol. Now Hampshire poultry breeders are advertising for old ganders to guard their farms against raiders, who are becoming very daring—riding over the country side in fast motor vans and stealing eggs and Christmas poultry. Mr L. G. Richards a well-known Rhode Island poultry-breeder said that ganders give warning quicker than watch-dogs and they know how to break.a man’s legs with thefr wings. TWO ROBBERS KILLED, HOLD-UP IN CHICAGO FAILS. CHICAGO, December. 22.. The Cliff Tea Rooms was robbed by a bold gang on December 2i and, because the proprietor expected a return visit a policeman iti plain clothes was installed to watch. At 1 o’clock two bandits called, and 20 customers were ordered to line themselves against the Avail for a rapid robbery. Since then Capone had been absent and had forfeited his bond. This announcement came as a distinct surprise to higher gangdom circles, be cause word had ibegun to spread that Capone, known officially as (“public enemy number one,’’ had gained ft measure of immunity. UNWANTED CATS. ROMAN SOCIETY’S EFFORTS. LONDON, December 20. How would Mr J. T. Lang’s new Landlord and Tenant Act apply in this ease ? asks the Rome correspondent of the “Times.” An eviction order, “owing to their archaefbgical incompatibility,” hanging over the heads of a tribe of more than 100 cats living in Trajans Forum has been delivered to the Roman Animal Lovers’ Society,, which has been ordered to remove them within a short period, ' ;■ A hope that they would have been motored to a healthy suburban resort, in which they Avould pass the remainder of their days on the dole at the public expense, proved illusory, owing to the economic crisis, and the society is faced with the unhappy dilemma either of themselves suppressing the cats by the most humanitarian methods or of allowing the city authorities to eliminate them, unless people are willing to afford them hospitality. The society offers transport of the cats to such persons as will provide maintenance for them And treatment when they are sick. Although notice to this effect appeared only this morning, 20 offers to receive cats have reached the society, which is deteimined to save the animals at all costs.
