DIAMONDS
REPORTED FIND IN NORTH ISLAND. DUNEDIN, Decern!>er 24. Major R. McFarlane who was to have gone South by the whaler Kosmos to collect natural history specimens for the Marine Department, told a “Star” reporter thajt just before the (date when the whaler was to leave, he by chance found a trace ol diamonds in a place in the North Island, and exploring supcrficialy he found crystals which are now proved to he true diamonds of a blue white variety. The samples so far are mostly small, but the Major has one as large as a carat. Upon receiving the result of the test he promptly secured an option over the ground and is at present keeping to himself the exact locality. The discovery caused him to let the whaler go, after arranging with another of the Kosmos party to carry on the scientific work.
