MERCERY SHOP ROBBERY
THIEVES MAKE BIG HAUL.
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, December 18.
Clothing to the value of several hundred sterling and also two to three pounds in small cash was stolen from the.'mercer’s shop of Vance Vivian last night or early this morning. The interior of the premises presented a strange sight when one of the proprietors arrived this morning to open the shop, the- stock having been thoroughly ransacked. Entrance was gained through the rear of the building, a hole being cut in the three ply wall big enough to enable a hand to be inserted to turn the door lock. On the first floor suits and other clothing had been strewn all over the floor. Apparently all the stolen property had been fitted on, and unwanted garments were thrown down. Dozens of dinner suits and most of the stock of silk dressing gowns were taken, a travellers sample case, which had been left in the building overnight being used to remove the goods, / At the moment it is difficult to estimate the total value of the stolen property.
