FALSE FIRE ALARMS
PERPETRATOR’S ARREST.

AUCKLAND, November 21
As the sequel to a false alarm given to the City Fire Brigade at eight o’clock to-night, the police arrested a man aged 28 years, in Svmonds Street. Following on a series of false alarms in the inner city area on the previous evening, special measures were taken by the police to-night. A large number of plain clothes men were stationed in the vicinity of the alarm boxes. Shortly before 8 o’clock, a man was seen to walk down the left hand side of Svmonds Street, towards the city. As he walked swiftly past the fire alarm box. he was seen to whip out his hand and break the box. Although his hand was wrapped in a handkerchief, it was slightly cut. The man then swiftly recrossed the road. The man’s .movements had been observed by Constable McElliiniiey, of the City Station, who was hiding in (plain clothes behind a fence a few yards away. The constable promptly made the arrest.
The City Brigade answered the call as the arrest was being effected.
