DEMONSTRATION

BY WEST COAST FIRE BRIGADES

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT RUSS.

At, Ross oU Saturday the annual West Coast Fire Brigades Demonstration was successfully held. On Friday evening the Annual Conference was held, followed by a hall, the demonstration taking place on Saturday, and concluded with a banquet in the evening.

There was a large attendance throughout the day watching the competitions'. There, was an excellent water supply and capital times were put up, a Greymouth team (Malloy and Grant) making record time 33 1-5 secs in the two men event, or 4 seconds better than the standard. The following officials were in charge:—

Referee, Deputy Superintendent A. AVhite (Greymouth) ; Judges, Lieut. .AlcEnnney (Kumara), Lieut. Skeats (Cobden), Foreman Coulson (Hokitika), Cnpt. McFarlane (Kumara), Capt. Gilmour (Cobden), Capt. McKay (Ross); Starter, Deputy Superintendent McKendry; Field Secretary, Secretary AValtou; Organiser, Secretary A. Peebles. The results were #s follows:

One Man Event (Browning Memorial, Mor.ley Cup and Gold Medal): — Hokitika 66 4-ssecs (penalty 3secs.) 69 4-5 1 ; Ross 75 2-5 (penalty lsec.) 76 2-5 2 ; Denniston 75 1-5 (penalty 2sec.) 77 1-5 3; AA 7 estport 76 (penalty 4secs.) 80 4. Also competed: Kumara, Otira, Cobden. Two Men (Rose Cup and two Gold Medals): —Greymouth 33 1-5 secs. 1; Kumara 34 3-5 (penalty lsec.) '35 3-5 2; Otira 37 4-5 3; Denniston 38 3-5 4. Also competed : —Hokitika, Cobden. Ross, AVestport. J. Grant and F. Malloy, the winning team, put up a New Zealand record.

Three Men Disabled Event: —Hokitika 47sees. 1; Greymouth 48 2; Cobden 49 3; Hokitika 51 4; Ross-52 3-5 5. Two teams from each brigade competed in this event, all the brigades starting. The Shield points only counting for one team in each brigade. Two men Reel (Thompson Shield) : Otira 60 l-ssees. 1; AVestport 62 2-5 2; Hokitika 62 2-5 (penalty 5 secs.) 67 2-5 3 ; Denniston 68 2-5 4; Kumara 68 3-5 (penalty osees) 73 3-5 o; Ross 68 (penalty 9secs) 77 6; Cobden 67 1-5 (penalty 15 sees) 82 1-5 7. Greymouth also competed, their hose jamming on the reel, and they could not proceed. Five Men Hose (Beiiyon Clip): Hokitika 29 l-ssecs 1; Greymouth

29 1-5 2; AVestport 31 3; Kumara 31 3-5 4. Cobden. Denniston, Otira and Ross also competed. 111 the run off between Greymouth and Hokitika, the latter had a walk over, Grey being unfinished with a blow out.

THE BABE-

TV ball on Friday evening attracted a: large attendance from all round the district. Totara Hall was gaily decorated for the occasion. Mr Richards had charge of the floor which was in perfect order, and was assisted by Mr Stewart. The Ross Orchestra supplied excellent music. which was highly commended t>v the visitors. Dancing wtes taept goung lively -all the time, old and modern dances being indulged in. 'Hie sniper was supplied by the ladies and the dainty eatable* were much enjoyed.

THE BANQUET

After the competitions the visitors w-.r ( * entertained at a hapqnet in the Coronation Hall, fhe Mayor (Mr W. Osmers) presided, and a length; toast list was honoured. The Mayor presented the prizes won during the day, the winners being heartily applauded. gong and story passed the hours pleasantly the’ reunion lieing a very happy one. »

WEST COAST ASSOCIATION ANNU AL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the M <‘s Const Fire Brigade Association was held at the Coronation Hall, Ross, on Friday evening. The President Captain Gilmour (Oibden) presided and the following other delegates we re-

present : Past Presidents McKi'iulr- 'h-d Port), White (Greymouth), McFnrlane (Kumara), Vice-Presidents. M dl.ams (Hokitika), McEnaney (Kumara), Lieutenant Callaghan (Westport), Captain Wogan (Denniston), Lieutenant | Sikeats (Cobden), Foreman J. ]*<*» ! (Hokitika) Foreman Nelson (Greymouth), Captain McKay (RossL Toro-, man Malloy (Otira), Secretory Peehbs (Boss), Secretary J. Walton Coast Association).

President Gilmour, in moving the adoption gave great credit to the Secretary for ue good position of the Association, .vliich. after purchasing 290 feet ol base at a cost of £l6, had a credit, ~llurn-o in the Post J.ffice up to £24. Otira Brigade presented to the Association a very handsome silver Cup. 1 lv, for a three man event, and tc he for Disabled Hose (draw l o ' places). .It was M'osolvt’d >3‘ accep the cup on the above conditions and hat a letter of thanks t>e sent to the Otira Brigade for their handsome donation.

The Thompson families of Hokitika whose late fathers hud held the position of Captain and Lieutenant of the Hokitika Fire Brigade for a number of years presented to the Association a. very handsome shield, for eompetiion to he awarded the winner of the Vive Men Reel Event and the shield to be perpetual. It tv us resolved to send a letter of thanks to the donors lor their appropriate trophy. After a lengthy discussion, it was •(■solved to procure Past President .badges for the past officers who lm • old those positions. It was resolve that a hearty vote of thanks lie i'orded Deputy White, Greymouth, for the voluntary assistance in fixing am altering hose and couplings for then association.

It was resolved that the Seeretarj and Treasurer be one office, also tha nominations for officers be in th< hands of the Secretary, one month prior to the annual meeting. It. was decided, with the consent ol the Hokitika delegates, to hold the next annual demonstration at AVestport. The ’election of officers took place as follows: — President, Foreman Williams (Hokitika ; Vice-Presidents, Lieutenant McEnanev (Kumara) ; Lieutenant Callup, ban (AVestport); Lieutenant Skeats (Cobden); Secretary, J. AValton (Greymouth) ; Trustee, Deputy AVhite (Greymouth). After the (newly elected officers vere installed and a vote of thanks to the retiring officers, the eonferenc closed.
