(Australian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 2. TWe weather yesterday s was warm for the Flemington V.R.C. races. The attendance was. large. The New Zealand bred horse, La Justice won the Maribyrong R'nxe brilliantly. La Justice cost eight hundred guineas as a yearling. It is a fltable mate to Phar Lap, and has had two wins in three starts. It shows

great p roni rse. Phar Lap led for the last nine furlongs in the Melbourne Stakes and he won without being extended. Tregilla made a promising effort, hut Carradale was disappointing. Phar Lap has now won approximately thirty-five “thousand: 'pounds sterling in stakesBalloon' King had an impressive vie. tory in the Derby. His jockey, P'h-. has won this race previously on Beverage. Beragoon, Strephon and Phar Imp. Balloon King carries the colours of the late John Brown (the coal magnate) who won the Derby with Prince Foote in 1909. MELBOURNE-, Nov. 1. An attempt was made to disable the Melbourne Cup favourite, Ph a >' Lap, at Caulfield this (Saturday) morning. He sprinted two furlongs on the sand in twenty-eight seconds, and when he was leaving for home, shots were fired al him from a closed motor car. Some of the pellets were said to have lodged in the horse’s covei. Phar Lap was frightened, but he is stated to be unhurt. His attendant anted very courageously. The motor drove away quickly after the shots were fired. The police am inquiring into the matter.
