PALMER AND HAINES
(Australian Press Association.)
SYDNEY, November 2. At the Stadium, in a fifteen rounds return bout for the middle-weight ‘ title, ten thousand spectators saw a stirring battle. Jack Haines (ILJ) fought a draw with “Young” Palmer (11.4), of Victoria, and retains the title.
Palmer fought wonderfully well, and many thought that he should have
Avon. Haines was in much better form that Avben the pair met on October 4th.
Haines’s lip was badly out, two stitches being necessary, and his eye was again damaged. He was a sorry spectacle. Palmer’s face was much swollen after the gruelling mill. The radio report of the fight stated Palmer was the aggressor for the most of the fight and had Haines at times hanging on, much to the crowd’s disfavour. Palmer continuously scored close up and at times made the champion miss badly with his quickness and alertness. The decision given, a. draw, met with a most unpopular reception from the crowd, the greater part of whom considered Palmer should have gained the decision comfortably.
