MR BAVIN RESIGNS.

Mr Bavin to-day tendered the resignation of li.is Government to the Governor, but agreed to carry on until tho formation of Mr Lang’s Cabinet Ministry.

The checking of preference votes cast at the recent State elections is approaching completion. The State Treasurer, Mr Stevens’s re-election for the Croydon electorate is now assured, and Sir Thomas Henley (a Nationalist) has been elected for Burwood by a narrow margin. Mr Jar vie, the Nationalist candidate for Ashfield, seems to be certain of victory, but at Bondi the Nationalist, Mr Jacques has been defeated by Mr Landa, the Labourite, by 821 votes. Mr Hodges the Country Party candidate, has retained the Monaro neat by less than two hundred votes. Four of the country seats are still in doubt. MORE TAX INCREASES. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) CANBERRA, November 1. In addition to the new taxation proposals already announced, the Federal caucus agreed on a five per cent, increase on taxation on income from personal exertion, oxceeeditig £SOO sterling, which is expected to yield £175,000.
