CONSTABLE ATTACKED

AUCKLAND, October 28

Alter he had arrested one of their number, an attack was made on a constable in Greys Avenue, by a party of young men who threw him to the ground, kicking him about the head and face. As constable Morgan was passing, about ten young men who appeared to be in a gang together, left an hotel and as they went up the road indulged in “sky larking,” while it is alleged obscene, language was used. Tlie Constable determined to arrest one of the men and succeeded in taking him into custody. When walking away with his charge tlie others followed and suddenly rushed him, throwing him to the ground by force of numbers, in spite of resistance. Constable Morgan was then kicked about the face and head and pummelled, while the arrested man was able to break free from his grasp. Given a description of the men, the police made a search later and arrested two men as suspects. J bev will be charged in tlie Police Court with assault, and obstructing Constable Mor-

gan. Constable Moreau received no serious hurt, his chief injury being to tlie inw. which is cut and swollen as the result of kicks. After the attack he required medical attention.
