CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

•THE HERMITAGE, Q^k.,23. Following on a paiper by E. der (Wellington) on commercial examinations being given at the conference the following remit, moved by the Canterbury Chamber, was carried: (T) That this conference endorses tire principle of commercial examinations and the adoption of a. similar syllabus to that in 'use by tlif Wellington Chamber; (2)- That, with the view of making the examinations of Dominion value, a scheme be inaugurated. by which a standard certificate could be issued by tiie Associated Chambers of Commerce in New Zealand “for the whole Dominion, steps being taken to arrange for candidates in the various centres be entered for examination under such a. co-ordi-nated scheme; (3) that a Committee be -set np for. the pmpose of codifying definite proposals for a scheme of commercial examinations, under the auspices of the Associated Chambers of Commerce.

The following remit, was moved bv Mr Edwin Salmond (Wellington) and carried:

‘•That this Conference is of opinion that definite steps should be taken to increase our export trade with the Dutch East Indies, and that the Government be urged (1) to send a missionary, preferably a commercial man to that territory immediately to gather the necessary inlormation and report fully on prospects; (2) that pending the establishment of a. diiect service between New Zealand and the Dutch East Indies, and the consequent necessity of shipping our products via Australia, the Government be urged to pay the extra freight and transhipping charges thereby incurred. The following was carried: —“That in view of the information just received that the ieport of the Railway Commission has been talked out by Parliament, this conference expresses its profound concern at the attitude taken up, and urges the Government to give effect to the report of its own Commission at the earliest possiblp moment, and that the Commission or Board should not be of a political character.”
