KINGSFORD SMITH. SYDNEY RECEPTION. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, October 23. A civic reception was tendered to Wing-Commander Kingsford Smith today, many leading people in public life, aviation and business being present. A luige crowd cheered Smith on his entering the;Tpwn Hall. The Lord Mayor, Alderman Marks, said that Smith, had set a standard of sane flying which it would be well for others to emulate. Australia was proud of her son, who had made such valuable contributions to aviation.
Other speakers included Sir Edgworth David.
Wing-Commander Kingsford Smith, in a characteristic reply, expressed his deep gratitude for his amazing welcome. whic-li he would never forget.
ANGLO-CAPE SERVICE
THE COST AND THE ROUTE. LONDON, October 22. The contract with the Imperial Airways, for a weekly service from Egypt to South Africa, • connecting with the existing A-nglo-Egyptian services, provides that the aggregate liability in subsidies for five years shall be £940.000, of which Britain contributes £270,000. The remainder is to be recoverable from the Governments through whose territory the service passes. It begins early in 1931, and it runs to Cairo, Khartoum, Nganda, Nairobi, Rhodesia, Tanganyika. PRESENT FOB. ATLANTIC FLYERS
LONDON, October 22
The “Daily Express” states that Levine, owner of the airplane “Miss Columbia,” has sold the machine to Mr Sherwin Cottenham, a wealthy Canadian, who is living in England, and who has presented it to Boyd and Connor, the Atlantic fliers, in token of his admiration for their recent flight. Boyd*, who is a Canadian, says they will now call the machine “Miss Maple Leaf.”
