RAILWAY SHUNTER’S DEATH.

CHRISTCHURCH, October 22
Charles James Barlow was found with his throat cut at his homo at Opawa Road this evening. He was taken to the hospital, but on arrival it; ere. lie was dead.
Barlow was 43 years old. Ho was a railway shunter.
AN OLD LAND MARK DESTROYED
DUNEDIN, October 23
The Bridge Hotel at Beaumont, ultimately associated with the early history of the province, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday. It is thought that a fused wire caused the outbreak, and as the old building is entirely wooden, it was wiped out : n 30 minutes. The few boarders escaped with barely their clothes. The hotel was owned by Edward Pearson and occupied by J. H. Jones. The insurances on the building were, £3200: contents £I2OO, both with Lloyds.
FOUND HANGING
WHANGAREI, October 23
Mattemo de Gregorio, aged 50, a restaurant keep, was found hanging in a washhouse this morning by a charwoman. He was occupied till midnight superintending a bridge party held at his premises. His bed had been slerpt in, but the man was dead four hours when found. He has been in bad health for some time, and bis wife is in a private hospital. Deceased owned property in Italy, which lie and wife visited twelve months ago. SERIOUS RESISTANCE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 23. For drunkenness, resisting the police and using obscene language, Patrick Byrne, with many previous convictions, was sentenced to six months hard labour at Lyttelton this morning. The police said Byrne resisted so violently that he had to be thrown to the ground and handcuffed, and then lifted on a lorry by three constables.
AN UNUSUAL CLAIM,
CHRISTCHURCH, October 23
In the Magistrate’s Court, James Arnold, a clerk, claimed to recover from Leonard Smith of Colombo Street, Christchurch, described as President of the Christchurch Branch of the Dominion Sportsmen’s Association. He claimed £IOO, allegedly paid to defendant for the purpose of helping the Association to carry, on propaganda work to get the bookmakers licensed. Plaintiff, said counsel, was one of five who lent- money on the understanding that lie would get it back when the Association had sufficient funds. Plaintiff said he paid the £IOO to the late Petet Grant, when approached for funds.
Counsel for defendant submitted that there was no case against Smxyx personally, as Smith was not in Clirntchurch at the times when the money was alleged to have been paid. The Magistrate upheld counsel’s contention and non-suited plaintiff.
