TEN YEAR SENTENCE, FOR SHOOTING AT POLICEMAN. (United Press Association.—By,Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] LONDON, October 18. In contradisinction to the treatment cf ’American gunmen is a, sentence, of ten years’ penal servitude that has been imposed on Arthur .John Cox, a man aged twenty-eight, for shooting at a policeman. A woman, on hearing a noise; in the house, summoned a policeman,.• When he was discovered. Cox, said to the policeman: “Stop, or I will fire!”
The police officer gave chase, and Cox fired three shots at him, but they were fruitless. .The".officer pursued and overpowered Cox. Tn sentencing him, the Judge said that he trusted that the sentence would deter others in England from carrying revolvers in the pursuit of burglary.

FOUND IN THE ARCTIC. OSLO, October 17. Norwegian newspapers record that the British Arctic air route expedition, which is using Sir E. Slmckleton’s “Quest” to, explore the ice at Cape. AGAINST STRENUOUS ATHLETICS. LONDON, October 17. “The Times” Rome correspondent states : —“Anything leading woman from her natural and fundamental mission of maternity should be avoided,” says the Fascist Grand Council, in ordering the Italian Olympic Committee to reconsider the women’s athletic activities with the assistance of competent sporting and medical authorities. The newspaper “Observatore Romano” urges the Fascists also to take up the moral aspects of this problem, especiallv the preventing of women from asisting sit. public gymnastic competitions which are not in keeping with their spiritual welfare.
