(Our Own Correspondent.) The concert which was held last week in aid of Uio local Eire Brigade fluids proied to he one of the most successful function of its kind held in Ross for some yeans. The concert drew a crowded house and the audience was delighted with the programme produced and the brigade funds benefited to the ex lent ol £2O. A dance 'followed the concert and was also well attended, the Boss Orchestra supplying splendid nuiisie free ol charge. 1 lie foil living is the concert progain urn: —Overture, Ross Orchestra: song, -Mrs G. Abulsoit ; song, Mr P. Barker; song, Miss Xlilly MeKav. All of these items were well received and in every ease a recall was demanded. The second half consisted of a minstrel entertainment consisting of Mr ■). Bridgman (centre) Mr J. Ablcvion (bones), A. Parker (tumbo), J. Muir, J. Johnston, E. Balthrop, R. Parker, and P.Parser and Miss Ethel Parker at the piano. The large number of jokes were clean and crisp, the local hits causing much merriment. Mr IV. Blacklow was stage manager and carried out his duties in a thorough manner, lie thanked the audience for their attend unco in such numbers which the Eire Brigade fully appreciated and congratulated the promoters of the concert on presenting such an enjoyable on to Haitipiem,

The local Fire Brigade are steadily practising for Dm Demonstration which takes place here on Ist November, and it is fully expected that most of the valuable tropics will stay in Ross. The following brigades have nominated teams to compete on that date, viz. : Demiiston, Westport, Reefton, Otira, Kumara, Cobdoii, Hokitika, Greyinoutli and Ross. Altogether there is expected to be over 60 visiting firemen present. On the 31st inst a ball will be held in the Totara Hall to; which all members of the Eire Brigades are invited, and on the following evening a banquet will be tendered to the visit-

The Ross Cricket Club play their opening match at Ross to-morrow against the liuatapu club. The local players will be: Messrs D. P. O’Connell A. Donaldson, A. Mason, F. Balthrop. H. Jones, J, Jones, R, Richards, J. Houslahan, F. Heveldt, J. Smith and T. Houlahan. .to-' Mrs M. Cornish, who libs been a resident of Ross for many years left on Tuesday last with: her daughter for Wellington where they will in (future reside. Mrs H. de Bakker also left for Wellington on'-the ,sani|',day on a visit to her son, who has been- an officer in the Post Office for some years. The Gloom Chasers Comedy Company ate playing at Bpas to-night. They have a good reputation and a full house is expected.
