OFFENDING TAXI-DR !\ ER
AUCKLAND, October 15
Unless lie: drives .carefully in the, future, Sydney Dawson,' a taxi-driver, is in. danger of losing his license. All F. K. Hunt,' S.AI., made this plain when Dawson appeared at' the Police Court this morning and pleaded guilty to charged of >failirig cto have'- lights showing on a stationary car and dangerous driving. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that on September 18 a man named Charles Field gave Dawson notive to leave his house because Dawson, who rented one of the rooms in the liqjjse, had .paused several disturbances. Other, hoarders said they would leave if lie did not get rid of Dawson. “Dawson took , his effects away,” continued, Sergeant Kelly, “but he later came midnight- and, , after' hreakiriji ; through the back door, which had been temporarily fastened, struck Field. After Dawson got into the house he went into the room of ,a .married woman. Field then went foi a constable and-as he was going along Exmouth Street Dawson chased him in the c-a,r. He. drove the car on to the. footpath and struck Field on the foot, ripping his boot off. Dawson’s car grazed a fence and then crossed the road on to the other footpath, almost colliding with a telegra-ph. post. The chase was down hill and the total distance of the skid quarks of the car was 74 feet. The fence- showed signs of. the impact.” “Dawson denies that he chased Field in his car.,” said Air Allan Moody, .who appeared fori defendant; “He admits he had a dispute with.the ffian, hut I suggest that what was the act of a stupid man.” “How would you like to be chased hv a man in a car who follows you on : to the footpath and rips' your hoots off?” said ATr Hunt. “T trust, I would not be there at such an early hour,” laughingly replied counsel. Air Hunt then asked what occupation- Dawson followed. Detective-Sergeant Kelly: He’s a taxi-driver, sir. He’s not fit to l fie in. charge of a wheelbarrow. (Laughter.) On the first charge, Dawson was fined 10s and costs, and on the other £5 and costs. “Your license will be endorsed and if you cause any more trouble or even break a* by-law you will lose your license altogether,” the magistrate told Dawson.
