BRITAIN’S WORKLESS
RAISE THE TARIFF ISSUE
WITHIN THE CABINET. i United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, October 16. It is known that considerable differences e,xist within the Cabinet these .originating in the growth of, unemployment in the country. The “Daily Telegraph’s” political editor, commenting on the fact, says: —That a section of the Cabinet now realises that the Government’s plansincluding relief work schemes, are totally inadequate to cope with the .2,176,191 workless people. •The political editor says he gathers .that.the Ministers have been compelled in these circumstances, to consider the question of tariffs as a means of helping the home industries and promising trade with the Dominions. ‘ r The outcome,” he continues, “cannot be predicted. The opinion is growing that the Government is embarrassed on all sides, and that it may ride for a fall in,the near future.
In the meantime, adds the “Daily Telegraph,” M,r Baldwin’s new statement is being senrohingly scrutinised. It ■is understood that his proposed emergency .tariff would consist of flat rates for manufactured and isomimanufaetured goods respectively.
