SOME RECOMMENDATIONS

The following are among the recommmenda.tions ef the Railways Commission, the report of which was presented in the House of Representatives this afternoon. The removal of the management from political control and the appointment of a Board of Directors having complete control over the whole operations; staff reduction, by dispensing with all surplus labour; increases in passenger fares, holiday excursion rates and certain goods freights; higher charges .for carriage of mails; a complete revision of staff conditions and staff itself so that salaries and wages will bear proper relation to revenue; further writing down of railway capital by £1,900,COO; reduction of train services on unprofitable branches to provide reasonable facilities for carriage of goods, and discontinuance of passenger trafficon some branches, and co-ordination of road and rail traffic. The report estimates the economies suggested would amount approximately to £294,000. This amount, together with the increased revenue, should assist the finances of the Department to an extent of approximately £628,000 annually.
