Mr MacDonald says:—“He was a truly wonderful man. His intellectual capacity was equalled by his deft command in debate of every weapon, both of offence and defence.”
j Hon. Clynes:—“He was a dangerous, damaging, political opponent. Admiration for his extraordinary gifts submerged the feeling of hostility which his combative qualities usually provoked.” Lord Reading states:—“He was one of the most strikingly powerful personalities of our time.” Sir John Simon:—“A striking combination of bodily intellectual vigour with an amazing gift of phrase, repartee and audacity resource in a discussion.” , All the newspapers devote lengthy reviews to his life works to gether with, special articles thereon. His Majesty in a message to Lady Birkenhead says:—“The Queen and myself assure you and your children ot our true sympathy. Lord Birkenhead’s loss will greatly be regretted. I will ever gratefully remember his .distinguished services in the highest offices of the State.” Numerous other tributes are paid by Lord Birkenhead’s political friends and opponents, LONDON, October 1. Commenting bn the death of- Lord Birkenhead, “Tlie Times” says: “The true valuation of his career and its ideals will long be disputed, but no figure in his day was more real to the mass of his contemporaries.” The “Daily Express” says: “To those who urge that he made mistakes and had his feelings, we can answer ‘Yes,” and ask ‘Who is without them.’ At the same time he was s. great fighter, a great patriot, a great Lord Chancellor, and a great friend.”
BODY TO BE CREMATED
LONDON, October 1
The body of Lord Birkenhead will be cremated at Golders Green on Friday. The ashes will be taken to Charlton. LYING IN STATE. (Received this dav at 1.5 p.m.) ■ LONDON, October 1. A memorial service to Earl Birkenhead will he held in Westminister Abbey on Monday. It was Lord Birkenhead's wish that people of all classes who wished to attend such a .service, should go, with no difficulty to visitors.
At Greys Inn where the body is lying in state, .mostly typists and clerks are visiting. ’
