WOOL RESEARCH

EUROPEAN CONFERENCE

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

LONDON, Sept. 23. A paper was read at the Wool Research Conference by Mr A. 0. Rivett, of Australia. He said: “No attempt lias been made in Australia to touch the manufacturing side of the wool industry. That belongs to Britain. . I am convinced that an .appropriate division of the work is desirable. Australia, and South Africa are shouldering the responsibility for production, and Britain that of manufacturing.”

Air Marsden, of New Zealand, reregretted that there was not sufficient contact between the wool producer and the wool manufacturer. There also was a lamentable lack of information in regard to the attributes oi wool that were desirable from the manufacturers’ point of view and whether M was desirable to develop pedigree types of sheep suitable for the manufacturers.' The present predominant ones were the romney and eofriedale types. With New Zealand’s relatively uniform climate, wool might ultimately be purchased on a fairly definite specification, thus stabilising industry. My Du Toit, of South Africa, said that the practice of sending Heir students to Australia, had Had a marked influence on the standard oi South African wool, resulting in the Government creating a number oi scholarships for research.
