HOKITIKA HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

A special fineetiiig of the above Board was held last evening to/consider a comiminie'ition from Mr .J. O’Brien, M.R., relative to a proposal by the Minister of . Education to include in the Finance Bill this session, (proposals to wipe oht-tlie Akaroa and Hokitika High School Boards, and appropriate the funds and revenues oft the Boards to the Canterbury Education Board for the furtherance of secondary education in the respective districts. Mr J. A. Murdoch, Chairman of the local Board, presided.

Lt was resolved to communicate with Mr O’Brien thanking him for supplying the information so promptly. and asking him to oppqse the proposed amendments. Also to invite the Akaroa Board to act in consort, and to request the Hokitika School Committee, Borough of Hokitika and Westland County Council to telegraph the Minister and Member for the District to oppose the proposed legislation. Tlie public will be in sympathy with the action by the Board, and all concerned are to be complimented on the prompt action taken. The local control hap proved eminently satisfactory, and the Board has served a. very useful our rose in handling its funds foi the advantage of the local District Hi;* 1 ) School. Parents in both town and country have occasion to be pleased at the steps taken to assist the High School. The provision of hostel accommodation here for the country pupils has been of great service to country residents, and bv the removal of control from the district, this and other. features of assistance the Board has been able to afford education locally will be in jeopardy and doubtless seriously curtailed.
