N.Z. INDUSTRIES
ißy Telegraph— Press Association). INVERCARGILL, Sept. 1. A New Zealand Industries Week commenced here to-day, and during, the six days, over which it extends the people of Invercargill and Southland will have the opportunity of observing how adequately the manufacturers of the Dominion can cater for. the needs, of Now .Zealanders. The object of the week is largely patriotic and if the < endeavours of those who are promoting it are successful, it should result in a decrease of unemployment. It is estimated that an extra 2s 6d per week spent in, each home on New Zealand goods would total £35,000, of which £17,500 would represent materials and miscellaneous items, .and £17,500 wages. This would provide a living wage for over 4000 workers. To-night the city is decorated with a multitude of coloured lights, while special displays of New Zealand-made goods in the shop windows are an attractive feature, the business people having entered the movement with enthusiasm. Amusement is mingled with, instruction, and during the week there will be rugby, hockey and soccer matches and a swimming carnival.
