TELEPHONE SYSTEM

FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS. ON LONG-DTSTANCE LINES, <By Telegraph—Per ITess Association.* WELLINGTON, August IP. In a statement concerning further iniprovments in the speech efficiency of long-distance telephones, the Post-master-General said that the installation of a. single-channel carrier system between Napier and Wellington has recently been completed. Within three months from the present date, it was intended to instn.l two carrier telephone systems between Gisborne and Napier, and an additional carrier circuit between Napier and Palmerston North, while in tin* South Island voice frequency amplifiers had been installed at Tim aril and Christchurch, and a carrier telephone system had been established between Christchurch and Grey mouth. By moans of this additional equipment, the Department had made available two, high grade telephone circuits between -Christchurch and Dunedin, and Christchurch and Greymouth, in addition to duplicating lines. The new systems would result in a considerable improvement in speeen between Christchurch and sm'h other centres as Dunedin, Gore, Invercargill. Greymouth. Westport and Hokitika, as well as an appreciable improvement in the clarity of long-distance conversations. Another direction in which an improvement would lie found was in the link between Dunedin and the Nelson and Marlborough districts. It was now possible to provide an all day service. Further improvements which are still being made and which are contemplated in the near future would bring all the exchanges, except those remotely situated, into easy telephone communication with each other.
