Southland’s hold oil the Ranfurly Shield was strengthened to-day when they decisively defeated Otago by 37 points to five. This was Southland’s most convincing victory over the sister province. The game was played in fine weather, though rain during the night had made the ground on the heavy side, and it became a thrifie greasy as the play proceeded. .The Southland forwards played magnificently, . and were well supported by their backs, by. whom most of the tries were scored,- Southland dominated the first spell, when Otago seemed quite unable to hold their vigorous pack, whose vim and dash had diminished but little in the closing stages. After the interval, the Maroons early asserted their superiority, and except on rare occasion were hammering away at the 'Otago tine. Their hacks also showed to advantage, and delighted the crowd with some spectacular bouts of passing. The visitors were seldom seen on attack, but they went down gamely to a vastly superior team. On to-day’s showing the Southland pack will present formidable opposition to any challengers for the Shield. '

The Otago team . was not nt full strengh in to-day’s match.

It was a hard and fast game, in which both sets of backs gave a good account of themselves, and on occasions delighted tlie crowd by -sparkling passing bouts, in which, despite tlie slippery ball, the handling was sound. The first spell was in the visitors’ favour, with.Taranaki to tile fore in tlie first quarter of thcl second spell. The final session saw the visitors defending strongly, witli the local read vanguard striving strenuously -for a weakness in the defence. Hunt and Hunter were the nick of the visiting backs, with Wills and Robinson the pick of an even lot of forwards.
