ALLEGED THEFT
OF £1322 WORTH OF DEBENTURES. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association WELLINGTON, August 6. Pleading that certain City Council debentures—there were thirteen each of £IOO, and valued at £l322—were a gift, Victor Alfred Smith, to-day pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft, and he was committed for trial. The bonds were the property of Martin Byrne, a deceased City Council employee, who suddenly dropped dead at work, and who for some time before his death, had been boarding with the accused..- The will of deceased;appointed the'Public Trustee as administrator of his estate, and the cfeceased had mentioned .that he had £IOOO invested in City Council debentures. The accused was interviewed by a representative of the Public Trustee, and the matter was reported to the- police. An inquiry showed that nt the time that the accused was speaking to the representative of the Public Trustee, he had handed over twelve of, the debentures to shareholders for sale.
