PROMINENT MAN’S DEATH

ARSON CHARGE

| By Telegraph, Per Press Association. NELSON, July 29. In connection with a case, in which James Giles was sentenced to two months 'imprisonment for inciting Arnold James Giles, his son, to commit arson at Auckland, the Magistrate allowed the case to be reopened. It was stated on behalf of accused that there were extenuating circumstances. H'is motive was not to make money out of the fire but to get his wife out of the house. Accused was at present taking divorce proceedings- against his wife. Accused was a good workman and would be taken away back into his old employment when lie had served his sentence.

The Magistrate said he had reconsidered the case and decided to confirm the previous sentence. The offence was a serious one and if tlhe instructions of the letter had been carried out, would have put the blame on the son.

TRAIN RUNS INTO HERD OF CATTLE.

SEVEN ANIMALS KILLED

CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. Two head of cattle were killed and five so badly injured that they had to be destroyed, when the ten o’clock north train from Kaiapoi ran into a herd of seventy head at the Sneyd St. crossing, one mile north of Kaiapoi, yesterday morning. They‘were the property of Mr W. L. Parkinson. The cattle were being driven from Kailcoura, hut wOuld not head into the wind and snow. At the ‘time of the

accident, a. strong wind was blowing and snow was falling heavily. The herd became unmanageable, and stood still on the crossing.
