CAR FATALITY

CARTERTON, July 7.
A motor accident occurred on Saturday night. 1 A; car, driven by Hugh William Munro, .a scrub-cutter of Masterton, with fa ..friehd, Janies Wilson Griffiths, pulled up at the Royal Oak Hotel, South Carterton, and a stranger asked for a lift to Taratahi Hotel. This was given;,; and pulling up at Taratahi, the driver -and companion thought the stranger had also alighted, and re-entered the car and proceeded along Clareville Road and crashed into the bridge railings seriously damaging the car. Groans were heard in the back seat and the stranger was found to be badly injured and was sent to the Greytown Hospital where he died from injuries, which included a fractured jaw and skull.
Enquiries to-day show the deceased was Patrick Duane, employed as a slaughterman at Waingawa Meat Works. He was aged .about 50 .and lived at the Works boardinghouse. He left there on Saturday,. He came originally from Eodtsoray, Melbourne, and had worked at various parts of the Dominion as a •slaughterman. There are no known relatives.
