Mr D, J. Evans, County Clerk, left to-day for Wellington to attend the meeting of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks, which sits on Tuesday, and to represent the Westland Counties’ Association, which sits on Wednesday Mind ± uiirsday. Mr Evans returns next Saturday.

Each year the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association is gaining in strength. Last year the increase in membership totalled 1238. “Interest, in ex-service associations throughout the world seems to-be growing,” states the annual report. “The desire of exsoldiers, almost veterans now, to meet old comrades and to recall the happenings of other days is one of the main reasons for this interest, plus the old wonder* ui spirit of rendering assistance to those less fortunate than others.”

An accident happened at the Dorothy Falls track extension work yesterday morning about 9.30 o’clock when a fall of earth took place in a cutting resulting .in Wl.Ji.iam We>bb<, ngjed 19 years, one of a party of four engaged there, being struck and receiving substantial enjuries, including a fractured skull and fracture of the right arm, also receiving injuries to his leg. The injured lad was brought to Westland Hospital for treatment, his condition being fairly serious, and there was no alteration this morning.

The wedding was celebrated at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Greymouth, by the. Rev. J, W. Hayward last evening of Miss Agnes Jean Meikle third daughter of Mr and Mrs James Meikle, of Blackball, and Mr Francis Tinning, of Dobson. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Janet meikle, and Mr John Tinning, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Mr „nd Mrs Turning leave, to-day for Christchurch where their honeymoon will be spoilt.

It is announced in this issue that the Westland County Council will Strike the annual general rate at its not meeting on Tuesday, July loth. The ratepayers will note with interest (and tio doubt pleasure) that there are no special rates to be struck this year, the Council having arranged to pay off the special loans involved. This relief will no doubt be appreciated at this period when there is a stringency abroad, and settlers are receiving lower ]irices for their commodities. The relief granted by the Council in this mater applies chiefly to the ratepayers of the Southern Riding.
