PUKEKO PLENTIFUL
FARMERS DECLARE THEM A
NUISANCE
CHRISTCHURCH, June 12
Two instances of pukeko becoming a nuisance in Canterury came before .ast night’s meeting of the Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, when it was stated that, .in spite of the recommendation of thu Society to have a short open season for the birds this year, a close one had been declared by the Government. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote authorising the ranger to take or kill pukeko found on the property of Mr W, Eder, of Saltwater Creek, because they were becoming a nuisance.
“I think this hears out the justness of our recommendation to have a short open season,” said the president, (\t C. H. Lawrence). “However, the Government thought otherwise. It would have been much better than having people apply to the Government for permission to destroy birds because they are becoming a nuisance.
Mr D. C. Macfarlance applied for permission to shoot pukeko on his property at Waiau. They hadn t been shot for some years, he said, and were becoming a nuisance, and beginning to destroy the stacks. MV W. Deans said the pukeko were there in thousands. .'Mr S. F. Barnett: Would it he po.->-oi'hle to scare instead of shooting them P
Mr Deans: No, I don’t think so There is no danger of their being shot out.
The aonlieation was referred to the Bangers’' Committee.
