WOOL FABRIC DUTY

The Tariff Bill Conference members neld a special meeting and made several last-minute changes in the Bill, among which was a decision to accept the Senate’s rating of mixed fabrics containing 17 per cent, of more wool i>v weight as dutiable at the wool rate to the extent of their wool content plus a duty on the other materials in the cloth, instead of the earlier fixed duty of twenty cents per pound plus forty per cent. PARROTS BARRED. VANCOUVER, April 2<i. Vancouver customs authorities have closed the local port to parrots and love birds, following an outbreak of parrot disease traced to birds recently arrived from Yokohama. All parrots have been ordered to be destroyed. A large part of the infected shipment has already been sent to Eastern Canada, and are being traced. Six cases of the disease have been reported and two are likely to prove fatal.

This caused drastic selling and all sections of the market were affected, despite a desperate effort by bulls to stay the reaction. United States steel reached a new lowlevel of 182. Anaconda copper went below sixty for the. first time in three years. The losses throughout the List were from one to nine pounds. They were, how-ever, in the great part recovered in the final hour upon a short covering.
