CAR KNOCKS PEOPLE DOWN

AUCKLAND, April 17

A motor car driven by S. Thomas, of 47, Great North Road, ran on to the pavement at the junction of Queen Street and Fort Street early this affternoon, and knocked down three women and one man. One of the women received severe head wounds and was taken to the Auckland Hospital. The man received the full impact of the car, but he suffered no more than a severe shaking being thrown backwards into a shop door.

The airmen, Piper and Kaye, circled over Blenheim at noon to-day on a flight to Christchurch.

CHILD FATALLY BURNED. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 18

A child aged 21 months, Martin Rees by, son of Arthur H. Reesbv, of Inglewood, on Thursday wandered into a private garage next door to his home. His mother heard him screaming, and found him with his face, chest and cfothes terribly burned with sulphuric acid. The child died in the New Plymouth Hospital this morning. The garage was owned by Hislop A. Hedster. The sulphuric acid, which was used by him in his work was left in the garage.

MAN FOUND GASSED,

AUCKLAND, April 18

“Suicide by gas poisoning,” was the verdict returned by Coroner Hunt at the inquest to-day on John Henry Hawes, a single man, aged wno was found by his mother and father dead, at their home on April 10.

The father of the dead man ifouiul his son lying in the corner of a room with a sheet pulled round his head and a gas tube in his mouth.

CAR DRIVER, FINED. PAHIATUA, April 19

Charles Lassen, of Maingatainoka, a settler, was fined £3o when charged wn.li being drunk while in charge of a car. On a second charge that he continued to drive the car after he was forbidden to do so. He was fined £2 IDs.
