RAT IAVAY EXPKRIAIENTS

"WELLINGTON. April 11

The Railway Department has for some time been carrying out experiments with the burning of New Zealand soft coals on its locomotives. In connection with these experiments, an interesting device is now under tost. Ths is known, as a Danger combustion control apparatus and is a patented device intended to facilitate the 1 burning of soft coals. The apparatus consists primarilv of two units, a steam blast in the fire box and an air draft equaliser in the smoke box. The Department has been using a special form of fire grate in connection with the experiments and it is hoped shortly to have sufficient data available to decide as to the suitability of ths apparatus for the use of New Zealand soft coals.
