Louis Alfred Silson, gardener by occupation and a Deacon of the Pentecostal Church of New Zealand, 'otherwise known a.s the Assemblies ol God, was to-day fined C 5 and costs C2 l&s on the charge under the Marriage Act. The prosecution was the first ever hoard under the Marriage Amendment Act. Magistrate Hunt said that Silson in a letter .sent to eomplaiiitants isaid : “wo have no further fellowship with Mr and Mrs Hawkins under present conditions” Mr Hunt traversed the evidence and said:—“‘Now this coming fro/n a spiritual adviser to religious minded people like Hawkins must be very distressing and disturbing and is the very mischief the Act was passed to prevent.” As it was the first prosecution the penalty will not he heavy, although the offenders are liable to £IOO.

OBITUARY.

WELLINGTON, April 14

At the age of seventy years, the Right Rev. Monsignor John McKenna passed away to-night at St. Patrick’s Presbytery Mastcrton,, after a long illness. He was for many years a wellknown and well-beloved figure in the AVnirarnpa. district, having been appointed to minister of spiritual needs of St. Patrick’s Parish. Masterton, in the late eighties of last century.

A serious motor smash occurred at Mount Stewart on Saturday evening, when Archie Hickey, on a motor-cycle, and a car containing a party of five footballers, driven by Joseph Evans, collided. The tlircg, niosj; concerned were removed to tlie hospital—Hickey, with both jaws and one leg broken ; Evans, with a broken arm, and Phillip Gerald Fitzgerald, with shock. Details of how the . accident occurred are meagre at present.

Norman John Cook, a Johnsonville groom - , and his wife have died as a result of a motor accident on f he Ngahauranga (Jorge Hoad about 2.4 b this afternoon.

Two fivo-seater ears collided at a right angled bend and Cooks’s car went over the hank and was completely wrecked, ending its career in the stream at the bottom.

Mrs Cook sitting beside her husband, who was driving, was killed instantly ,and Cook sustained a, fracture of the ha.se of the skull, a broken breast hone and a fracture of the rig’ - dying in hospital at 4.30. Tii > two (hi!.lren, Joan, aged eight.

The offer of Labour representatives to relinguish the reins of office was accepted hy representatives of the Citizens Association at last night’s meeting of the City Council.
