A scrutiny of votes cast at the elections is proceeding slowly, but it is apparent that the Labour majority is increasing. The leader, Mr Hill, seems assured of at least thirty members. It is not yet known whether the ex-Premier, Air Butler, can retain his seat, but three of his Ministers are defeated, it is probable the state of the parties in the new Parliament will he: Labour 30, Liberals 13, Country 2, Independent 1.

The State Government’s policy to cope with the present industrial depression. includes the adoption of a system of payment by results, and in cases where the 44-hour week obtains alul is retained, payment only for the actual time worked.

It is understtod the Federal Government has decided to grant assistance of manufacturers of newsprint in Australia probably in the form of a county of £4 per ton on paper made in the Commonwealth and an extra duty of £1 on imported newsprint. Tnis follows the lines of the undertaking by the Bruce Ministry that aid would be given to local manufacturers condtionall.v on the output reaching i>o,ooo tons per annum.
