FARM ORGANISATION IMPROVEMENT.
WELLINGTON, Feb. 10
Following the recent visit of Commissioner Cunningham, ■ territorial leader of the Salvation Army in New ‘Zealand to the Farm of Agriculture at Putaruru, an announcement is made from Army headquarters here that" 'a big development may shortly be expected, which will put this venture or organisation on a. sounder financial looting, and thus bear more of the cost of rearing, educating and fitting a hundred or so boys there to play their part in life worthily.
The Commissioner outlines his schemes as being in the direction of improving the pasture lands as rapidly as possible. Half of the area, which is pumice, has been cleared, and is now carrying excellent rye and clover, affording good pasturage for herd cattle and 140 milking cows. He also aims at establishing a herd of purebred Friesian cattle and a herd of milk strain Jerseys. A herd of purebred Berkshire pigs will also be a part of the stocking scheme.
The Commissioner says he found neary va hundred fine boys, ranging from six to sixteen years, on'the farm, all being educated and trained in agriculture Thirty had just arrived from home.
“In speaking to them,” says the Commissioner, “I urged them to take their coats off, roll up their shirt, sleejves and work, work, wc| k. for that is the only royal road to success in life.”
