SERAJEVO ASSASSIN
MEMORIAL UNVEILED
(United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, February 1. Several newspapers are referring to a cerehiouy being held on Sunday at Serajevo, that of unveiling a memorial to Gabriel Princip, the nineteen year old assassin, whose crime paved the way to the world war, describe it as “one of the most remarkable ceremonies in history.” The papers point out that the ceremony is one amounting to an affront to the world. The memorial to the assassin will be placed in the exact spot where Princip stood when he fired the fatal shot as the motor-car, in which the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, and his wife were being driven, was backing out otf a cul de sac in 1914. This part of the Serajevo quayside already bears the name of “Princip,” whose deed is signalised by an imposing tomb and a tablet in another portion of the town, on which arc the words; “To the patriot who liberated his country from its oppressor.”
To-morro\f’s will be the third memorial with his name and portrait on it. It was the intention of the Black Hand to erect to him a magnificent monument pretentious, and, belligerent, but, owing to the intervention of King Alexander, who possibly guessed what Would be the effect of *£uch a Jisplay abroad, this was abandoned. Great preparations are, proceeding for the ceremony, which will be an occasion for widespread festivities.
