Play in the New Zealand tennis championships commenced with the men’s singles at 10 a.m., in war in and overcast conditions and a light wind. Sturt played much too accurately for Barrel', winning three straight sets by forceful driving. Seay is showing splendid form against J. B. Parker. A. G. Wallace and H. Orbell are fighting out a close match, Wallace showing a slight superiority after an indifferent beginning. Wilson appears likely to have an eiv vv win against Purvis. Melody is making a great fight against Aligns with little prospect of success. Results: Sturt heat Barrel* 6—l, 6—2, 6—l. Wallace is leading Orbell 6—4. 4—6, 3—l. Seay is leading Purvis 6—2. 2—2. Aug-is is leading Melody 6—2.
