SECOND TEST. M.C.C. SCORE FAIRLY. WOOLLEY’S FINE BOWLING. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 25. • Tlie second day’s play in the second test match between New Zealand and the M.C.C. team at the Basin Reserve to-day, was full of .incident. All visions of a big total by the wearers of tlie silver fern were banished after Page and Blunt had been disposed of, the tail coders, and from five for 407. the whole side was out for 439. Woolley bowled particularly well, capturing seven wickets for 76 runs off 171 deliveries. The Englishmen commenced their innings after lunch, and at drawing of stumps they had lost six wickets for 255 runs. Dawson, Duleepsinhji. Legge, Nichols, Worthington and Gillignn all batted solidly. The whole English side would have been out had Nichols and Worthington not been dropped off Merritt. James also badly missed an easy chance of stumping Gilligan off Morcitt, but tlie wrong one beat the- bat, the wickets, and the keeper and went for two byes. The crowd this afternoon was estimated at 12,000, £6OO being taken at the gates. This, with the £322 taken on Friday, leaves about £IOO to be gathered in to create a comfortable record for a test match.
Correction:—Woolley bowled one no ball, making New Zealand’s score 440. WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. It is fine weather but misty, for tlio resumption of play at, 11.30. Nichols (48) and Gilligan. (20) continued the innings, the bowlers being Merritt and Badcock. The first two overs were maidens though there were four byes off Badcock. Nichols sent 260 up and reached 50 by hitting Merritt twice to the leg boundary. He had batted 109 minutes. Runs came at a fair rate and 280 were on the board after a quarter of an hour. Dickinson misjudged- a bit by Gilligan off Badcock, losing a. chance of a catch, the ball reaching the fence. At 11.50 Merritt bowled Gilligan.' 288—7—32. Cornford drove Badcock to the fence reaching 10 and sending 300 up after the innings was in progress 257 minutes. Off the last ball of the: over lie gave Page a simple catch close in. 303—9—10. Allom was the last man. Nichols was a long time without scoring. At 319 Dickinson relieved Merritt and i the change was successful, Allom putting up an easy chance and closing the innings at 12.5. The Englishmen, batted 230 minutes.
Mills and Dempster opened New Zealand’s second innings at 12.45 to the bowlers Nicholson and Allom. The batsmen showed ' good -.form, runs coming steadily. Dempster, scored more quickly than his partner. At 18 Woolley relieved Worthington, who had replaced Allom. The lasv named came on again at the other end vice Nichols. The last three overs before lunch were maidens. At the adjournment the score was 18, Dempster 9, Mills 5.
